| Cat Description |
| Apricot |
|
| Apricot is a very intelligent 5 or 6 years old
cat. He was originally a feral cat roaming the
countryside. When we first saw him we thought he
was a rabbit, given the speed he was fleeing at.
He took the habit to come to eat at our doorstep
every evening at 5:00 p.m., but we could not
approach him. This went on for the entire summer
of 1999. However that year the cold came early
and on one particular cold evening in the fall,
Apricot “decided” to let us pick him up and put
him indoors. As soon as he found himself inside,
Apricot seemed to regret his decision. The change
was too much for him to bear. He
was “terrified”. He went to hide on a bookcase,
behind some books to re-emerge after a few days
as a totally domesticated cat. He then took the
habit “to hug” with each paw on both sides of
your neck like a koala bear.
Apricot had frequent eye infections and bleeding
gums, we suspected FIV and he was in fact
diagnosed with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, the
equivalent to Aids.
FIV is transmittable to other cats only through
bites, but Apricot is a very quiet cat,
therefore we did not have any problems keeping in
together with all the other cats.
His condition has improved, with a good diet and
vitamin supplements Apricot is completely over
his eye infections and his gums are now fine. He
gets his teeth brushed every second day.
Apricot learnt to open doors and he is
especially .proud to open the door of the only
room in the house where cats are not allowed. The
other cats stay behind him, waiting for him to
open the door, so that they can all go parting
into that ”forbidden” room.
